About me

Brian CoxMy name is Brian Cox and my mission is to work with smart people on interesting projects.

With more than 30 years of experience in strategic planning, communication, marketing, and customer service. I have successfully led small and large teams providing internal business support as well as direct services to clients.

I joined Mecklenburg County Government in 1986 and held key leadership positions in one of the nation’s largest local government entities. As Director of Business Support Services, I led the agency responsible for providing information technology, facility management, human resource, and communication services to over 5000 employees. The County’s IT service was named one of the nation’s 10 best in 2014, and featured in a Microsoft video as a cloud-based technology success story.

Among my previous positions, I served as Mecklenburg’s eGovernment/Customer Service Manager and helped create the County’s award winning MecklenburgCountyNC.gov website. While an Assistant Director for Park & Recreation, I worked with Cox Communications (no relationship) to secure the domain ParkandRec.com and launch the County’s first web presence in 1996. My marketing team also developed and trademarked the Recreate All Year theme, featuring the mascot RAY, to promote youth recreation programs. The County’s indoor waterpark bears the mascot’s name – Ray’s Splash Planet.

My career began in 1983 with Orange County, NC after completing a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. I received a bachelor’s degree in business from Western Carolina University, and completed the UNC Journalism School’s Technology & Communications Certificate program in 2012.

I am also the co-owner of six patents licensed to companies producing lawn sports logos. More info is available on my Grass Graffiti page.

My wife, Sharon, and I live in Charlotte where I serve as a Park Commissioner. You can follow me on Twitter at @ebriancox.
